Learning is not attained by choice, it must be sought for with ardor and diligence.

Anyone who stops learning is old, whether twenty or eighty.  Anyone who keeps learning is young.
Henry Ford

Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death.

The Real Bio

I grew up in Lakewood, Colorado, and am the granddaughter of two polar opposite grandmothers.  My paternal grandmother was a very large (to a little girl) Austrian immigrant who was strong, stern, tenacious, resolute, and quite adventuresome.   Antithetically, my maternal grandmother was a loving, understanding, and nurturing homemaker from a dirt poor Alabama coal mining town.  As luck would have it,  I think I inherited many of those qualities from both of my grandmothers.

I have more interests than hours in the day and have lived in Colorado, Montana and Alaska.  My husband and sons inspire and encourage me every day.  My mother's passion as a homemaker laid a strong foundation that allowed me to raise three remarkable men.  My father's passion for learning and creativity is burned into my DNA.

Now that my sons are grown with lives of their own, I found my own hidden passions - American history and writing.  I wonder if I should have been a history professor instead of a CPA, but I'm sure that will come in handy when this book becomes a New York Times best seller!

My professional career spans 25 years of service at every level of government - local, State, and Federal.  My professional writing is forever memorialized in State and Federal legislation.  I am proud of the contributions I have made to the government agencies that I served and like to think I learned a thing or two about how it all works.

I was inspired to write this book one afternoon while living in Alaska.  The idea sat in the back of my mind for ten years; with each passing year, I couldn't ignore the signals urging me to set a new goal and follow through on that Alaskan afternoon epiphany.  I finally mustered the courage to write and never doubted the idea or the reasons for writing it.

It's none of their business that you have to learn to write.  Let them think you were born that way.

Words that inspire me every day

"What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?"
Vincent van Gogh

"No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world."
Robin Williams

"You're never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream."
C.S. Lewis

"Mrs. Covey, your daughter daydreams too much."
Mrs. Meyers
(My 6th grade teacher's words to my mother - she was a real gem)

"Mrs. Covey, I have no doubt your daughter will succeed at whatever she tries."
Mr. Donald Glittenberg
(My high school Biology teacher's words to my mother)

I have never forgotten Mr. Glittenberg's words.  They have helped me believe in myself.
